MUSIC is one of those art forms which reflect social and cultural changes. If the society or the culture of a particular area is in decline, the music of that place will display the same. Similarly, when the society or the culture is flourishing, the music will also flourish. Therefore, music has a major character in the tracing the past of a country and its culture. Contemporary music owes much to the Ancient Greeks. In fact, the word "music" is derived from the 9 Ancient Greek muses, who were goddesses controlling the arts and sciences. Contemporary musicians refer to their muse, which is somebody who has an influence on another person's creative work. A number of musical terms have their roots in Greek. Nonetheless, when Ancient Greece fell into decline and the Byzantine and Roman Empires collapsed, Greek music stopped its development for several centuries until it was revived in the 19th century. Greeks are believed to have considered music a way of exalting the glory of god. Music was also part of their social life. It was played on all types of social occasions. Since drama was also quite popular in Greece, music was used when drama was staged. It is normally said that Greek music lacked harmony. It was mainly performed by one vocalist and not by a choir as is normally shown in Greek plays. Ancient musicians strictly followed the laws of music and didn't combine one form with another. The rules were so stringent that the audience or listeners were not allowed to applaud. The purpose of musical shows was not to amuse but to teach ordinary people. Pythagoras was the first to launch the use of numbers to denote musical scales which he discovered when studying the differences in sound frequencies of varied length strings of a musical instrument. The concept was introduced to Ancient Greek Music. Thus, Pythagoras became the father of music theory. Most musical works, as stated, was monophonic. Therefore, they didn't differ from each other much. Contemporary Greek music is a combination of Greek traditional folk music and Eastern and Western tendencies.
