There are two types of erectile dysfunction. Rare as it is, primary erectile dysfunction means that a man has never had an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Secondary ED, a loss of erectile ability after a normal function, commonly develops slowly unless brought on by an injury or sudden medical condition. People once assumed that erectile dysfunction was commonly triggered by psychological problems. But we now know that conditions such as strain, depression and fear of poor sexual performance are at the causes of only 10% - 20% of ED. It is most often caused by physical factors, for instance blood vessel disorders, nerve damage, penile abnormalities. Male sexual dysfunction can also be an adverse side effect of certain prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. Yet, whatever the causes are, it is typical of males who have sexual dysfunction to have feelings of anxiety, guilt and low self-esteem. The U.S. FDA has sanctioned only three oral therapies to treat erection problems: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The medicines relax the walls of the penis allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a male is sexually stimulated, he can get an erection. The medications work by a similar mechanism to bring on an erection. There are insignificant differences in how long and how promptly the drug works. Levitra works a bit longer than Viagra. They both take effect in around thirty minutes. Viagra works effectively for about 4 hours, while Levitra for 5 hours. Cialis works a bit faster (in about 15 minutes after administration), and the effects last a lot longer - up to 36 hours in some cases. But while each medicine has proven efficient, none is cure-all. Besides, they can trigger problems when taken with other medications, in particular with nitrate or nitroglycerin heart drugs, as well as result in more general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in the case of Viagra - visual changes. Apart from drug therapies, there are other methods, such as mechanical therapies and surgery for severe cases of erectile dysfunction. The kind of therapy, hence, is dependent on the severity of erection problems. |
