Erectile dysfunction, also called male impotence, is the perennial inability to attain or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Some men experience chronic ED, and others have a partial inability to attain and maintain an erection. Frequent ED can trigger emotional and relationship problems, and often results in diminished self-esteem and confidence. These variations make defining the health problem and estimating its incidence difficult. Estimates range from 15 to 30 mln, depending on the definition used. The vast majority of male sexualproblems are triggered by physical factors, for example vascular, neurological and abnormalities in the genital area. In older males, ED normally has a physical cause, for example diseases, injuries, or side effects of medications. Any disorder that impairs penile nerves and blood vessels may bring on ED. Incidence raises with age: about 5% of 40-year-old males and 15-25% of 65-year-old males experience ED. Nevetherless, it is not an unavoidable part of aging. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1, 000 males in the USA, 7.7 physician office visits were made for erectile dysfunction in 1985. By 1999, that figure had almost tripled. The increase happened gradually, probably as therapies, for instance vacuum and drug therapies became more widely available. In fact, erectile dysfunction is treatable regardless of age, and awareness of this fact has been increasing. Today more males look for help and return to normal sexual activity due to advanced, powerful therapies for ED. There are oral, mechanical, injection and surgery therapies. One of the ways to better erectile dysfunction is to make some simple life-style alterations. For some males, selecting a healthier life-style, for instance stopping smoking, doing regular exercise, and reducing strain, may be all that is required to find relief. For those who require more intensive treatment, lifestyle changes along with other treatments can further help.
